DOWNERS GROVE, Ill., July 27, 2010 - Despite a struggling economy and unemployment levels hovering above nine percent, the fields of accounting, healthcare technology and information security are among some career fields in which the Bureau of Labor Statistics still projects above-average growth potential over the next several years. On Saturday, Aug. 7, more than 90 DeVry University locations nationwide will host National Open House events specifically focused on the in-demand careers for the 21st century, with a mission to assist local residents in reaching their professional and educational goals.
Event attendees will have the opportunity, both on-site and through an online virtual open house, to learn about emerging professions and degree programs highly sought-after by today’s top employers. Events will feature presentations on in-demand careers and financing your education, panel discussions, and the opportunity to meet with an admissions representative.
“A motivating combination of DeVry University’s student services helped me to stay focused on all the possibilities I had in front of me,” says former United States Marine Corps Sergeant Harold Heald, who entered the private sector after a serious back injury ended his 10 years of distinguished service to his country as an avionics technician on the CH-53E helicopter.
Prior to completing his bachelor’s degree in technical management with an emphasis in project management and as a member of Sigma Beta Delta honor society, Heald began his career as a field service engineer in 2007 with Dako Group, a global leader in cancer diagnostics. Since then, the father of one has been promoted three times and is currently Dako’s east region service manager with 11 direct reports over a territory that spans from Houston to Bangor, Maine.
“It’s precisely my experience as an undergrad at DeVry University, with so much support in my transition from the Marines to civilian life and help to stay focused on my studies after a grueling back surgery, that influenced my decision to recently pursue my master’s degree in project management from DeVry University’s Keller Graduate School of Management,” says Heald.
DeVry University’s academic programs are focused on student outcomes and many are designed in partnership with Fortune-level companies to provide real-world knowledge. Courses are taught by faculty members who are industry-leading professionals and provide students with personalized attention to help prepare them for career success.
DeVry University is home to five colleges of study with a breadth of degree programs that enhances students’ career prospects. For instance, DeVry University’s College of Business and Management offers a bachelor’s degree in business administration with an emphasis in accounting – a field that ranks among the top five open positions in the U.S. In fact, according to the U.S. Department of Labor, employment of accountants and auditors is expected to grow by 22 percent between 2008 and 2018, which is much faster than the average for all occupations.
“DeVry’s National Open House program provides an in-depth look into growing professions and how the variety of bachelor’s, master’s and associate degree programs we offer can help make the most of students’ potential,” says David J. Pauldine, president of DeVry University. “Maintaining a forward-thinking outlook, combined with a commitment to higher education, are the first steps toward employment within in-demand career fields.”
DeVry University’s National Open House Events will take place nationwide on August 7. Visit www.devry.edu for more information, timing and locations.
