DeVry University Students Show Support for Warrior Games; Student Veterans Praise Athletes and Their Commitment

DOWNERS GROVE, Ill., April 30, 2012 - As Colorado Springs prepares to host the 2012 Warrior Games, students at DeVry University Colorado Springs Center are also gearing up to support the Veterans competing in Paralympic-style competitions. In addition to support given to the event by the Veterans and active duty military personnel who make up more than half of the student body at DeVry University’s Colorado Springs Center, DeVry University’s parent organization, DeVry Inc., is an associate sponsor of the 2012 Warrior Games.

“DeVry University is honored and humbled to support the 2012 Warrior Games in Colorado Springs,” said James Caldwell, president of DeVry University Colorado Metro. “We are honored to be associated with fine organizations such as the USOC and the Wounded Warriors Program, and humbled by the dedication of the participant athletes and their bravery in service of our country.”

The Warrior Games, to be held April 30 – May 5, were created in 2010 as an extension of the daily programming being provided at the community level for injured service members and Veterans by the United States Olympic Committee Paralympic Military Program, in partnership with the Department of Defense, U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, and more than 150 community sport organizations. The competition has become a springboard for many service members and Veterans to continue participating in sporting programs in their communities after the event.

There are expected to be more than 200 wounded, ill and injured service members competing in seven sports, including archery, cycling, shooting, seated volleyball, swimming, track and field, and wheelchair basketball. The athletes will represent the Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard and Special Operations.

“Having served in the Air Force, and as a disabled Veteran, I know firsthand the challenges of returning to civilian life and am grateful to the assistance DeVry offered in helping me make this important transition,” said Samantha Musick-Frisbie, a DeVry University Colorado Springs student, who is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in technical management with an emphasis on human health services. “I am so proud of the university and the students at DeVry who have stepped up to show their support for these Warrior Games athletes.”

Musick-Frisbie is part of a vibrant military community at DeVry University’s Colorado Springs Center – over half of the students at the Center are Veterans or Active Duty. She, along with several other Colorado DeVry students, recently competed and received 1st or 2nd place honors at the Phi Beta Lambda State Leadership Conference in Grand Junction, CO. Samantha received 1st place honors, is on the Dean’s list and maintains a 4.0 G.P.A. Married and a mother of four children, she anticipates graduating in June 2013.

DeVry University Colorado Springs, a participant in the Yellow Ribbon GI Education Enhancement Program, has a steadfast dedication to support military personnel in the advancement of their careers or in their transition into civilian life. DeVry offers Veteran appreciation grants to qualified Veterans, and a special tuition rate for active duty military personnel and their spouses.
