DeVry University Earns Program Recognition from Society of Human Resource Management

Leading industry organization awards formal certificates to three undergraduate degree programs for meeting SHRM curriculum guidelines

DOWNERS GROVE, Ill., June 24, 2011 - DeVry University, one of the largest, private sector universities in North America, with nearly 93,000 students enrolled in the United States and Canada, has been recognized by the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) for having three human resource management programs that fully align with its HR Curriculum Guidebook and Templates. Formal certificates acknowledge that each of the following bachelor’s degree programs adhere to established SHRM guidelines: Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, with Human Resource Management Concentration; Bachelor of Science in Management, with Human Resource Management Concentration; and Bachelor of Science in Technical Management, with Human Resource Management Specialty.

“This great news just adds to my satisfaction in choosing to earn my degree with DeVry University,” said Jaclyn Hefling, a vocational trainer with Maywood, Ill.-based Pathway Vocational Training Program and a senior in DeVry University’s Bachelor of Science in Business Administration degree program, pursuing a specialization in Human Resources Management. “My career services advisor introduced me to an internship opportunity that helped me to get hired in my current role. Having my program’s quality now being recognized by SHRM further proves that DeVry is committed to my career success.”

As key segments of the job market begin to bounce back following the most recent economic recession, business leaders are once again investing in skilled professionals to manage their staffing needs. In fact, job postings in March 2011 for human resources and recruiting positions were up 34 percent year-over-year, according to’s Employment Trends for Human Resources report. In offering degree programs that align with SHRM standards, DeVry University is well-poised to help prepare its students for success in a wide variety of careers in human resources.

"Virtually every industry employs managers and consultants in the fields of human resources, employee training and labor relations," said Donna Loraine, DeVry University provost and vice president of academic affairs. "Our three SHRM-recognized programs provide meaningful recognition of DeVry University’s quality business curricula, which help our students develop the specific business and management skills needed to build successful careers in a number of dynamic human resource roles."

Established by SHRM in 2005 and revalidated in 2010, the HR Curriculum Guidebook and Templates provide a resource for colleges and universities to track human resources curricula against a common, minimum skills set needed by employers. SHRM staff worked with the DeVry University College of Business & Management to perform a review to determine that the school’s human resources-focused undergraduate bachelor’s degree programs aligned with these requirements.
