Sandra Rains is the health information technology chair and senior professor at DeVry University in the College of Health Sciences, where she teaches courses in Health Information Technology, including Health Information Fundamentals Practicums (HIT 170, HIT 271), Medical Terminology (HIT 110), Current Procedural Terminology Coding w/Lab (HIT211) and ICD-9-CM coding (HIT202/204).
Ms. Rains has been a professor at DeVry University for more than five years. Previously, she worked as a medical records director at Ohio Health Doctors Hospital, and as a medical records coder at Nationwide Children’s Hospital.
Ms. Rains is a member of AHIMA and OHIMA. She holds a master of business administration and a bachelor’s degree in health services administration from Franklin University, and is a certified registered health information administrator (RHIA) and registered health information technician (RHIT).
- I see the HIT field growing larger, stronger & more prominent in the business community. I think there will be more jobs opening up for HIT professionals.
- Professionals will need to attend the OHIMA, AHIMA, AOE and AHA programs for learning programs in order to stay current in the field.
- I think technology is going to change our field. Computer assisted coding is the latest technology coming out in our field. It is an exciting new technology; it requires learning for all involved.
