Sandra L. McKee

Sandra L. McKee is a senior professor at DeVry University in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences where she teaches classes in the areas of leadership, public speaking, technical writing, organizational culture and career development. Her specialties are in leadership and interpersonal communication.
Ms. McKee has been a professor at DeVry University for 23 years. During this time, she has done semester-long sabbaticals at two high-tech start-ups, each time in the marketing department as the liaison between engineering and marketing, and again at a telecom company to develop customer service training for their installation technicians. Prior to her work at DeVry, Ms. McKee was in publishing sales. She also has 20 years of professional speaking experience, five years of sales experience, 20 years of experience as a corporate trainer and consultant, 15 years as a career coach and has written six books on professional development.
Ms. McKee is currently developing a pilot program for the DeVry Academic Support Centers designed to provide the unique support needed by ADHD (attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder) and LD (learning disabled) students at the college level. She has also started a grant proposal to seek corporate funding for a research project in this area. Ms. McKee has been selected as presenter in the DeVry University teacher training and orientation program and has also received awards from DeVry University for teaching excellence. She designed and carried out a research project that was funded by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency on “Consumer Acceptance of Electric Vehicles.”
Ms. McKee holds a master’s degree in teaching with a major in English and education from Winthrop University, a bachelor’s degree in English from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and has completed post-graduate work at Louisiana State University in the area of marketing.
- In education, higher education institutions will need to strengthen their efforts to meet the needs of increasing numbers of ADHD and LD students.
- In corporate communication, the biggest challenge will be to leverage technology presentation methods with the critical interpersonal skills required in order to do business with increasingly diverse employees and customers.
- In management, she predicts a need to help people at all levels of corporations sharpen their interpersonal and formal communication skills. With technology’s help, more people in more remote places can be involved in critical decisions. However, that remoteness requires more subtle skill in presentation ability.
- In education, technology will dramatically improve students’ ability to access education in ways that are compatible with their own learning styles: pulse pens that record an instructor’s voice while a student takes notes; voice to text software that allows students with language processing disabilities to express their complex ideas in readable forms, and finally, online delivery platforms of textbooks that allow highlighting or audio accessibility.
